Spitzer IRS Spectra of Optically Faint IRAS Sources

چکیده
Extragalactic sources from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC) which have the optically faintest magnitudes (E & 18) were selected by spatial coincidence with a source in the FIRST radio survey, and 28 of these sources have been observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS). While an infrared source is always detected with the IRS at the FIRST position, only ∼ 50% of the infrared sources are real FSC detections, as estimated from the number of sources for which the fν(25 μm) determined with the IRS is fainter than the sensitivity limit for the FSC. Sources have 0.12 < z < 1.0 and luminosities (ergs s) 43.3 < log[νLν(5.5 μm)] < 46.7, encompassing the range from local ULIRGs to the most luminous sources discovered by Spitzer at z ∼ 2. Detectable PAH features are found in 15 of the sources (54%), and measurable silicate absorption is found in 19 sources (68%); both PAH emission and silicate absorption are present in 11 sources. PAH luminosities are used to determine the starburst fraction of bolometric luminosity, and model predictions for a dusty torus are used to determine the AGN fraction of luminosity in all sources based on νLν(5.5 μm). Approximately half of the sources have luminosity dominated by an AGN and approximately half by a starburst. The ratio of infrared to radio flux, defined as q = log[fν(25 μm)/fν(1.4 GHz)], does not distinguish between AGN and starburst for these sources. Spitzer Detection of PAH and Silicate Dust Features in the Mid - Infrared Spectra of z ∼ 2 Ultraluminous Infrared
We report the initial results from a Spitzer GO-1 program to obtain low resolution, mid-infrared spectra of infrared luminous galaxies at z ∼ 1 − 2. This paper presents the spectra of eight sources observed with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS). Of the eight spectra, six have mid-IR spectral features, either emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) or silicate absorption. Base...

Spectra have been obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph ( IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope for 20 sources in the Lockman Hole field of the SWIRE survey. The sample is divided between sources with indicators of an obscured AGN, based primarily on X-ray detections of optically faint sources, and sources with indicators of a starburst, based on optical and near-infrared spectral energy distri...
متن کاملWHY OPTICALLY–FAINT AGN ARE OPTICALLY–FAINT: THE Spitzer PERSPECTIVE
Optically–faint X-ray sources (those with fX/fR> 10) constitute about 20% of X-ray sources in deep surveys, and are potentially highly obscured and/or at high redshift. Their faint optical fluxes are generally beyond the reach of spectroscopy. For a sample of 20 optically–faint sources in CDFS, we compile 0.4–24 μm photometry, relying heavily on Spitzer. We estimate photometric redshifts for 17...

We have surveyed a field covering 9.0 degrees within the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Boötes with the Multiband Imaging Photometer on the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) to a limiting 24 μm flux density of 0.3 mJy. Thirty one sources from this survey with F24μm > 0.75mJy which are optically very faint (R & 24.5mag) have been observed with the low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectr...
